How important is feedback in medical training therapy?

The German Knee Society brings together experts from the fields of trauma surgery, arthroplasty, sports traumatology, sports medicine, physiotherapy, and science. To promote research, education, and training in these fields, they created the online webinar series ‘DKG Live’. In the latest episode, ‘Modern Training Therapy’, the advantage of using stappone sensor soles and their live biofeedback in rehab were presented.

On December 19, 2022, the third webinar in the DKG Live series of the German Knee Society took place. In this context, sports physiotherapist Jürgen Maureder, MSc. gave a presentation on the topic of “Feedback in Training Therapy – The Focus in Focus”. He spoke about the use of the innovative, medically certified wearables STAPPONE Physio and STAPPONE Rehab and their benefits for patients as well as therapists.

Problems in rehab

After injuries or surgeries of the lower extremity, partial weight bearing is often prescribed in rehabilitation. Patients are only allowed to put weight on the injured leg up to a certain limit – for example, 15 kg. Achieving this is extremely difficult without any reference, the patient’s compliance (their willingness to actively participate in therapeutic measures) is therefore very low when it comes to load management. Patients are afraid to do something wrong because they cannot check and correct themselves.

stappone as an innovative solution

Sports physiotherapist Jürgen Maureder has been using stappone in his practice for quite some time now and therefore has a lot of experience in physiotherapeutic training with live biofeedback.

In his presentation, he highlighted the benefits that STAPPONE Physio and STAPPONE Rehab provide to patients.

STAPPONE Physio consists of the intelligent stappone sensor soles and the corresponding software. The sensor soles measure the patient’s foot pressure load and other movement-relevant parameters such as stride length, speed, and cadence. With this visualization, patients understand exactly what they are doing wrong and can correct themselves or track the therapist’s corrections and recognize differences in their movements.

STAPPONE Rehab consists of the intelligent stappone sensor soles and the associated app. The soles are connected to the app on a smartphone via Bluetooth and the load limits can be set by the user. In case of overload or underload, the app provides a visual, acoustic and/or haptic signal. The correct load distribution can be checked during training but also in everyday life with the help of the app’s heat map.

The perfect combo for patients

According to the renowned sports physiotherapist Jürgen Mauernder, this combination represents a very special added value. The combination of verbal instruction and direct visualization increases the understanding and therefore also the patient’s compliance. Moreover, with stappone, optimal training is not limited to the physiotherapy practice, but patients can also train properly at home with the help of the app.
