Prehab2Rehab: Digital Innovation for Sustainable Health

Rethinking healthcare – that is the aim of Prehab2Rehab, a nationwide flagship project initiated by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute and funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). The project paves the way for future-oriented medicine. Its official launch took place at the kick-off meeting in Salzburg, where representatives of all partner organizations gathered. Among them was Peter Krimmer, CEO of stappone, who emphasized his company’s role and the importance of intelligent motion sensor technology in the context of modern healthcare.

At the core of the project lies the seamless, digital support of patients before and after planned surgeries – from prehabilitation to rehabilitation. For the first time, these two phases are being systematically linked to fully leverage the potential of digital technologies for improved patient care.

A strong interdisciplinary consortium – including universities, hospitals, and tech companies – is driving the project forward. One of the key technological components: the intelligent sensor insoles from stappone. The Austrian health-tech company is making a vital contribution to the digitalization of the rehab and prehabilitation process with its innovative solution.

Why Rethink Healthcare?

Despite major advances in surgery, outcome improvements for many procedures have stagnated. At the same time, healthcare systems face increasing pressure from an aging population, chronic illnesses, and a lack of physical activity. This is where Prehab2Rehab comes in: targeted measures before surgery, so-called prehabilitation,  can reduce complications, accelerate recovery, and sustainably improve quality of life. This approach becomes even more promising when it transitions seamlessly into rehabilitation – exactly what the project aims to achieve.

Digitalization as a Bridge

A central challenge in current approaches is the lack of structural integration between prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Digital technologies like the stappone sensor insoles close this gap. They enable continuous motion analysis and functional assessment in the patients’ everyday lives – mobile, precise and data-driven. Progress can be tracked in real time, therapy plans adapted, and setbacks detected early.

Moreover, digital tools reduce organizational barriers: many patients are unable to regularly attend rehabilitation centers due to logistical or health-related reasons. Solutions like stappone’s technology help overcome these hurdles and enable personalized care regardless of location.

From Pilot Project to Standard Care

The project focuses on three medically significant areas: knee replacement, hepatobiliary surgery, and cardiac surgery. In each field, the impact of digitally supported measures on medical outcomes and health economics is being evaluated. The technologies used – including stappone’s insoles – have already proven themselves in practice but are now being systematically integrated into the entire care pathway for the first time through Prehab2Rehab.

stappone as a Pioneer of Smart Prevention

Prehab2Rehab clearly demonstrates how well-conceived digitalization can create real value for both patients and the healthcare system. With its intelligent sensor solution, stappone contributes not only technological excellence. “Through our mobile technology and real-time data transmission, we are enabling new pathways for data-driven care before and after surgical procedures!”, explains Peter Krimmer, CEO of stappone.

By participating in the kick-off meeting in Salzburg, CEO Peter Krimmer emphasized the importance of the project for advancing digital health solutions. Prehab2Rehab may well become a model for modern healthcare – in Austria and far beyond.
