„stapp one was crucial for our study“ – Interview with Juan Fang from Bern University of Applied Sciences

In her study “Mechanical Design and Control System Development of a Rehabilitation Robotic System for Walking With Arm Swing“ Juan Fang (Phd, lecturer at Bern University of Applied Sciences) examined a possible design and technical evaluation of „a novel system for producing walking with synchronized arm and leg movement and with dynamic force loading on the foot soles.¹“ Here, the intelligent stappone sensor soles played a crucial role.

The aim of Dr. Fang’s study was to develop a system for walking rehabilitation with arm swing. Therefore she used an arm-leg robotic system and a curved treadmill. „The arm-leg robotic system enabled walking on the integrated curved treadmill, and produced dynamic loading on the foot soles.²“ A crucial part was to monitor the plantar pressure distribution during walking. After thorough research the team decided that the stappone sensor sole was the perfect solution to aid in their study: “We are very satisfied with our decision“ Dr. Fang says.

Wireless real time data

The intelligent stappone sensor soles are inserted into comfortable shoes and measure the patient’s foot pressure load as well as other important parameters. The corresponding medical software provides a visual Live-Biofeedback in real time. “It was quite exciting for us to see the colorful response for the first time. We had the participant wearing the shoes with the insoles and then we recorded the force reaction to compare it with the normal ground reaction pattern. This is our main aim so we can get more sensory information during training wich is better for rehabilitation walking.“ Dr. Fang explains.

Evaluate and validate studies with stappone

stappone’s objective data is a great benefit when it comes to research. In Juan Fang’s study the intelligent sensor soles played an important role: „We use the stappone system to evaluate and validate our concept and to see whether we can produce the target force reaction on the foot. So the stappone application is crucial for our overall development.“ With stappone the resulting objective data can be saved and then compared with those from other sessions to make possible changes or progress visible.

At the same time, stappone is very easy to use. Juan Fang pointed out that you don’t need to have a background in engineering or previous software experience to successfully use stappone. Furthermore, in her opinion the MedTech tool has big potential in many areas, such as teaching, rehabilitation, sport science or simply as a plus for other devices. „There are many areas that we can improve with this tool. I would definitely recommend stappone to my colleagues.“
