stapp one & Takeda: New quality of life for hemophilia patients

Hemophilia patient Dr. Rene Hüttenbrenner has had a long and painful journey. The hereditary disease hemophilia causes spontaneous bleeding in joints or even muscles, because the blood does not clot properly. Pain, swellings and restricted mobility were part of Dr. Hüttenbrenner’s everyday life. Today, he can walk again without pain – thanks to a new artificial ankle joint and comprehensive rehabilitation with stappone sensor soles.

Dr. Hüttenbrenner had to cut back on many activities in his life due to his hemophilia. His hobbies such as cycling or hiking were impossible, because every movement of the ankle joints made him suffer from great pain. This even reached the extent of surgery and the implantation of an artificial ankle joint.

But Dr. Hüttenbrenner is not alone with his disease. The pharmaceutical company Takeda not only supports hemophilia patients with medication, but also promotes alternative therapy concepts. This includes therapy with the innovative stappone sensor soles, such as those used by the physiotherapists at CIM (Competence in Motion, Graz). Dr. Hüttenbrenner was able to start rehab immediately after surgery – an important milestone for his recovery.

“The sensor sole was extremely helpful”

The intelligent sensor sole from stappone can be inserted into any comfortable shoe to measure the patient’s foot pressure load. At the same time, the corresponding medical software provides live-biofeedback in real time. The foot pressure load, body’s center of gravity and other movement parameters can be documented. This provides therapists with accurate, objective data that can be used to adapt therapy for individual needs and to visualize progress. Patients can use the live-biofeedback to check and correct themselves during training – this provides them with confidence and motivation.

Particularly in the area of partial weight-bearing, stappone provides important services. If Dr. Hüttenbrenner is asked by his therapist to put a pressure load of 15 kg on his foot, it would be difficult to comply. With stappone, he can easily check and correct himself. Even alone at home it is possible to continue training correctly with the STAPP ONE Rehab-App.

The rehabilitation was a real success for Dr. Hüttenbrenner. He is particularly grateful to Takeda, stappone and, of course, the physiotherapists at CIM for his newfound quality of life.
