Prehab Meets Rehab: How stappone Accelerates Knee Therapy

Behind the Scenes at the Medical Center Bad Vigaun

During a visit by stappone CEO Peter Krimmer to the Medical Center Bad Vigaun, the digital stappone sensor insoles were tested under real-life conditions. Together with Head of Physiotherapy Josef Sturm and Medical Director Prim. Dr. Hildebert Hutt, one key question took center stage:

How can digital technologies optimally support patients before and after knee surgery?

Research Project: Prehab2Rehab

This very question is currently being intensively explored in the Prehab2Rehab research project. The entire treatment pathway surrounding surgical procedures is being reimagined with a particular focus on knee joint replacement. stappone contributes through advanced movement analysis, offering a highly efficient method for accelerating rehabilitation.

stappone Technology Proven in Practice

In Bad Vigaun, the stappone sensor insoles were used in combination with the Motum system to validate technical processes and conduct functional tests. Special attention was given to knee-specific movement analyses such as:

  • gait pattern
  • load distribution
  • stability

The stappone insoles capture movement data directly in patients’ daily lives: precisely, continuously and without additional effort. Especially during the challenging period following an injury, it is crucial for patients to complete rehabilitation without unnecessary complications. stappone technology delivers exactly that.

“It’s truly impressive how helpful the insoles are while also being easy to use,” confirms Head of Physiotherapy Josef Sturm during the visit with stappone CEO Peter Krimmer.

In combination with Motum, a detailed picture of the knee’s current condition emerges. These objective data enable individually tailored therapy plans, both in prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

Prehab as a Key Success Factor

“A strong start leads to faster recovery,” explains Peter Krimmer. This is precisely what prehabilitation demonstrates: patients who train muscles and movement patterns before surgery recover significantly faster afterward.

This is where the stappone insoles play a crucial role. They help patients perform exercises correctly while simultaneously providing valuable data to the medical team. As a result, prehab becomes measurable, efficient and individualized.

Rehabilitation Without Gaps: Thanks to stappone Homecare!

After surgery, therapy often shifts to the home environment, and this is where gaps in care frequently arise. With stappone, these gaps are closed.

The sensor insoles continue to support patients at home, continuously capturing movement data throughout the entire rehabilitation process:

  • Therapists can remotely monitor progress,
  • adjust exercises,
  • and intervene early without needing to be physically present.

This creates a modern, flexible and safe form of aftercare!

With the stappone insoles, gait analysis becomes visible, allowing movements

to be understood more quickly and performed more easily.

A Digital Care Pathway from Start to Finish

Prehab2Rehab pursues a clear goal: a continuous, digitally supported treatment pathway from preparation to full recovery. In addition to knee surgeries, other surgical fields such as visceral and cardiac surgery are also being explored.

The project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and coordinated by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital Health and Patient Safety. Together with strong partners from medicine, research, and technology, such as stappone, a new standard in patient care is being established.

The Result: A Glimpse into the Future of Therapy

The visit to Bad Vigaun clearly demonstrated the immense potential of digital technologies in modern medicine. With stappone insoles, a decisive step is being taken toward data-driven, individualized and location-independent therapy.

From prehab to rehab, a seamless transition is created with one clear goal: helping patients return to an active life faster, more safely, and more sustainably.
