Digitalization in health professions is becoming increasingly important – the Nordic countries are already leading the way. By integrating stappone into the core curriculum of their physiotherapy degree, the University of Applied Science Krems (AUT) is following the lead and takes an important step into the future of physiotherapy.

New technologies offer the possibility to treat deficits and diseases even more accurately. The UAS Krems has recognized stappone’s potential in the field of physiotherapy and is successively implementing our MedTech solution into the core curriculum.

Just insert the intelligent stappone sensor sole into a comfortable shoe and it measures the patient’s foot pressure load and the body’s center of gravity. At the same time, the corresponding medical software provides a visual live-biofeedback on a tablet or computer. The certified medical device offers objective parameters that can be incorporated into anamnesis and treatment.

Wide range of application possibilities in rehab

stappone optimizes various indication areas from rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery on the lower extremity to supporting physiotherapy in neurorehabilitation. With stappone gait analysis the smallest deviations in the gait pattern are objectively visible.

Suboptimal pressure load in everyday life can be detected quickly and easily as well as in the field of professional sports. After injuries, the smart sensor soles offer enormous support in rehabilitation and its objective data also provides an additional basis for the decision whether athletes are ready to resume training or not.

Increasing patient compliance with live-biofeedback

Another area of application with great potential is partial weight-bearing therapy with live-biofeedback after lower extremity surgery. The essence of partial weight-bearing therapy is to not exceed a preset load limit – e.g. 25 kg. However, patients do not know what a pressure load of 25 kg feels like, neither can physiotherapists verify the correct pressure load with the naked eye. Using the combination of an intelligent sensor sole and a smartphone, therapists and patients themselves will be able to see exactly how much pressure load they are currently putting on their legs and have the possibility to correct themselves. In this way partial weight-bearing exercises and gait training can be performed accurately and effectively.

The future of physiotherapy

By integrating stappone into the physiotherapy core curriculum at UAS Krems, prospective physiotherapists are familiarized with new technology and innovative solutions right from the start. This paves the way for technological support in the healthcare sector and ensures that students can offer digital treatment options to their future patients.
