Fit for Surgery! – The Digital Care Pathway of the Future

Integrated. Digital. Personalized.

With Prehab2Rehab, a pioneering flagship project for the digital transformation of healthcare was launched in May. Its goal is to provide patients with the best possible support before and after planned surgical procedures through a seamlessly connected, individually tailored and digitally supported care pathway.

A central component: stappone’s intelligent sensor insoles, which precisely measure movement and load, enabling data-driven prehabilitation and rehabilitation. stappone contributes its technological expertise to this flagship project, coordinated by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital Health and Prevention and funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Why Prehab2Rehab?

Planned surgeries – whether on the heart, knee, or internal organs – often come with a sense of uncertainty for patients. This is where Prehab2Rehab steps in: the project explores how digital technologies can be strategically applied to optimally prepare patients for surgery and provide structured support throughout their entire recovery process.

The goal: a modern, integrated healthcare system that improves recovery outcomes while reducing the strain on healthcare resources.

stappone’s role: Making movement digitally visible

As a technology partner, stappone contributes its intelligent sensor insoles to the project – a key technology for digital motion analysis.
“Our insoles accurately record data on posture, step load and movement – both before and after surgery. This allows us to objectively track training progress, detect risks early, and tailor rehabilitation efforts effectively,” says Peter Krimmer, founder of stappone.

Benefits at a glance

For patients:
• Improved physical preparation before surgery
• Fewer complications
• Faster and more sustainable recovery
• Personalized feedback through digital tools like stappone sensor insoles

For the Healthcare System:
• Shorter hospital stays
• Reduced follow-up care requirements
• Faster reintegration into the workforce
• More healthy years of life through preventive measures

The digital care pathway at a glance

  1. Start at the General Practitioner or Specialist Clinic
The physician’s decision to proceed with surgery marks the beginning of the digital care pathway.
  2. Prehabilitation
Through customized training plans and digital feedback – including from stappone’s sensor insoles – patients are prepared for surgery.
  3. Surgery
Thanks to better physical preparation, patients enter surgery in a more stable condition.
  4. Rehabilitation
Postoperative care is enhanced by digital applications: movement data, progress monitoring, and targeted exercises support recovery.
  5. Follow-up in Primary Care
The family doctor remains a key point of contact for ongoing care.

A strong consortium

Under the coordination of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital Health and Prevention, 14 partners from research, business, healthcare, and technology are working together in an interdisciplinary approach. Digitalization serves as the connecting thread between all stakeholders – from doctors and researchers to patients.

stappone is proud to contribute to the success of this project as a technology partner with innovative sensor solutions.
